Elementary School Curriculum

An educational foundation is laid for students in the elementary grades with religious instruction and the basic subjects which are needed at the tender years. The following is an overview of the curriculum for the elementary years:

Religion - Students are taught about the love of the Lord and His precious Gospel message through Bible stories and the catechism. A variety of materials are used with the Bible as the chief resource. Each student in grade 2 is given his/her personal Bible for school use. Memory work begins in kindergarten.

Math - All the basic concepts of math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) are stressed in the elementary grades. Saxon Math is used as a textbook.

Language Arts - A strong emphasis on reading, English, and spelling is placed with the elementary years. In addition to textbooks and individual reading books, Trinity is engaged with the Accelerated Reading Program, a computer based individualized reading program. The phonics approach is used to teach reading skills.

Handwriting - Writing skills are taught with the D’Nealian method for students in grades K – 3.

Science - The study of God’s creation and how we fit into it and use it is stressed in the elementary grades. A variety of sources are used to teach science. Trinity emphasizes that God created the world and everything else in 6 literal days and that the theory of evolution is not scientific, nor is it correct.

Social Studies - Children are taught the basic structures in society, beginning with the most important structure – the family. As the student progresses through the grades, history and geography of the United States is taught emphasizing God’s role in our history and society.

Music - The elementary grades emphasize singing. Students participate in school musicals and sing anthems for worship services at Trinity Church. Students from grades 4 and higher are eligible to join the Trinity School Jubilation Choir and band.

Art - Students are taught art skills in class and have weekly projects.

Physical Education - Physical activities designed to increase coordination and strengthen physical growth are used by each individual teacher at the elementary level.

Computer Lab - Students are taught computer skills in the computer lab on a weekly basis. Investigations into certain subjects begin at this level.

Foreign Languages - Spanish is introduced to students in grade 5 and is taught 2 class periods a week.
